Garage Door Spring Changes
When a garage door does not open or close, it usually means the door has a broken spring. The springs lift the weight of the door, not the motor. Heavy doors weighing up to 400 pounds typically use two springs to lift the weight. The springs should match the weight of your door. A properly balanced door will hold itself at about waist height. It should have a bit of a pull at the top to open the door and a bit of a pull at the bottom to close it. Out-of-balance doors rocket open or slam down. Out-of-balance doors are fixable using the right spring and balance adjustments.
Types of Springs
Torsion Springs - These springs wrap around a pipe above the door. All torsion springs have a life cycle: the number of times the door opens and closes. Lakewood Garage uses torsion springs with a 30,000 or higher cycle rating. How long a spring lasts depends on the number of times it opens and closes. We recommend replacing all the springs if one breaks since they are the same age.
Extension Springs - These springs look like slinkies when engaged and are used on smaller garage doors. Lakewood Garage recommends replacing both springs when one fails. When one side is strong and the other weak, the motor unit may have problems opening and closing the door.
A Word of Caution to Do-It-Yourselfers
The energy stored in a garage door spring is enough to break bones, cut off fingers, and shoot off winding bars like a bullet. Homeowners unacquainted with torsion spring replacements, please call a professional like Lakewood Garage Door.
Garage Door Section Repairs
It is amazing how common it is for car drivers to hit their garage door. The repair is a bit more complicated than it seems. Sometimes, we install a steel beam, called a strut, across the door to straighten it. If the door is too damaged, we replace the door section. Our ability to replace the section depends on whether the manufacturer still makes the garage door. If they do not, Lakewood Garage recommends a whole-door replacement.
